He doesn’t claim to have all the answers or to be a miracle worker, just someone who is willing to listen and offer help. More so, he wants to reach out to those who are struggling to make ends meet or those who have been captured by crime. He knew it would be difficult for them because he was needed on the farm. His calling to become a priest came during a Mass after he had completed the 10th grade. “If someone knocked on our door, we never opened it. At 7:30 p.m., his family - including grandparents, aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews - would gather for evening prayer. After school, there would be more chores - including cleaning their clothes by hand - and then came his studies. The youngest of three children, Father Thomas was born with good health - unlike his sister and brother who have physical disabilities.Īs a boy growing up, his mornings before school saw him tending to the cows, cleaning their pens and feeding them. By his own account, he says, “my family is a very, very, very poor family.” But he will tell you, “ I am a lucky person because God was always with us.” Father Thomas grew up on a small farm in southeastern India.
